about
I am an award-winning natural dyer and eco-printer who works exclusively with organic materials and home-grown plant dyes. My specialism is one-of-a-kind handwoven textiles such as baby wraps, scarves and yoga blankets. I also share my skills by teaching dyeing and printing workshops for all ages.
These textiles were handwoven and naturally dyed entirely by me, Kathryn Tomasetti, either at my Botanical Weaves home studio in Lichfield, Staffordshire, or at my shared Cockpit Bloomsbury studio in London in the UK.
I founded Botanical Weaves in 2022, when I was awarded the Staffordshire Start-Up Grant. I won Cockpit Studios’ prestigious Dyers Award in 2024, sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Dyers, which affords me a yearlong studio space in London’s artistic Bloomsbury district. My business continues to chart a steady growth creatively.
I use exclusively natural fibres. Almost all are reclaimed (meaning yarn and textiles that are secondhand, end-of-projects or may otherwise be thrown away). My passion is to weave tradition with ritual. All of my vibrant colours — each one of which I cultivate or forage responsibly myself — come courtesy of organic traditional dye plants.
homegrown or foraged plants that I use for natural dye include:
Purples: Japanese indigo + madder/ Woad/ Cotinus (smokebush)/ Chocolate cosmos
Blues: Japanese indigo/ Woad/ Scabiosa black knight
Dark greens: Japanese indigo + French marigolds/ Dyer's camomile/ Goldenrod + Black walnuts / Common reed flowers
Light greens: Japanese indigo + French marigolds/ Dyer's camomile/ Goldenrod / Common reed flowers
Yellows: French marigolds/ Dyer's camomile /Goldenrod/ Weld
Medium oranges: Sulphureus cosmos
Dark oranges: Coreopsis tinctoria +/ Black walnuts
Reds: Madder/ Eucalyptus
Pinks: Madder/ Cotinus (smokebush)
Browns: Black walnuts
As all my textiles have been hand dyed and handcrafted, they are always completely unique pieces. There may be minor variations in both colour and weave.
Created with love and a deep gratitude to nature.
Thank you for your support! Kathryn
